2010 LVRR Summer Series 5k #2
Last night was the second race in the running club’s summer series. Yes – I’m whining about how fatigued my body is and that this recovery process is taking so long despite this length of time being typical – and then I go and run a 5k. Let me clarify the fact that I ran this and did not race it. Big difference. I did not even wear a watch. Imagine that, racing without a watch! That was the best part about this race, not having any idea how I was running and relying totally on my effort. I kept my effort at a moderate level, or what I felt was moderate. Turns out my current moderate effort is way slower than my usual moderate effort. No surprise there. But what that does tell me is that I am still very much recovering from the marathon and that the process is not nearly over. This is actually all working out rather well, I’m learning a lot about this whole process and can approach my marathon recovery in November quite differently. Always look on the bright side as Monty Python used to tell me.
So, the race. Well, it was National Running Day so I figured it was a perfect reason for me to head over to the Parkway and hang out with all my running friends. I even got to meet some new people which was nice. I warmed up with my fast friends and then lined up toward the back with some people I knew. They were planning on running a 26 minute race so I figured that was a perfect spot for me. The race started without much hoopla and a Peanuts-style murmur coming over the megaphone and I started running after being shoved around a bit which was totally fine because the beginning of the course is a little bit tight with 150 of us.
I set off at a moderate pace but have no idea what pace that actually was. I definitely slowed down after the first mile but not by that much. I tried to keep my effort as even as I could and kept my breathing in check so that I knew I wasn’t going too hard. The course is a loop along a creek, we cross the creek twice at each end of the loop. Around 1.25 miles there is a bridge which takes you back to the start/clubhouse. No, we don’t cross this bridge but I always want to run over it and DNF when I’m running a 5k here. This time was no different and I seriously considered it for the first time. What was I doing out here? I’m certainly nuts. I kept going because I knew it wasn’t much farther, a mere two miles until I was finished. I took the rest of the course easy and crossed the finish line in my slowest time in two years. I saw the clock read 25:09 as I approached the finish line, I have no idea what my time actually was once I crossed it. I never even bothered to look at the stats once they posted them on the wall of the clubhouse. Tonight it wasn’t about the race or the performance. It was about getting out there for a run on National Running Day and hanging out with my friends afterwards.
Final Time: 25:17
Overall: 75/145
Gender: 24/63
Age Group: 2/10

You’re brave for going out and running a 5K right now, racing or not! 25:xx is still a respectable time. Congrats!!
I hope the recovery continues to go well.
Brave or stupid?
I didn’t put too much effort into this run, just enough to make it slightly challenging. It was my first run of the week which I saved up just for National Running Day.
Again, this is the most difficult part of the process. We marathoners just want to go go GO! At this point, it’s more mental than anything since your body is clearly telling you something. Your training and marathon performance was so solid. I’m still in awe of your 15 minute PR- I mean, who does that?!?!?!!!! I like your approach right now, back off, stick to the bike, and let yourself eat, sleep and chill. You’ll get right back into it once your training starts for Philly. And it will be fun again, I promise! So for now, just have fun and continue to hang with your buds after the LVRR 5K’s!
You see, that’s my problem. I don’t want to go, go, go. I want to sit around and get lazy and fat. The extreme opposite of “training me”. The only reason I want to keep moving is so that I don’t lose ALL of my fitness but … I think that’s what a transition period is all about, sitting back and enjoying things. I think I might stick strictly to biking – it was so much fun this morning.
EXACTLY! That’s what I mean- we think that resting means losing our fitness, so we try to push through our tough runs post marathon. It’s so exciting to PR like that, and such a letdown to just… do nothing. I promise you that you won’t lose fitness, your body will remember the effort and get back right to it when you pick up your training for Philly! Perhaps you need some new training gear for your biking, in the form of XXXL MC Hammer pants?!?! HA! FYI, love the new layout!
I don’t know if anyone can stay in top form year-round, I had planned on changing my strategy but still think the way around this is to pick 1 or 2 races a year that you go all-out for and back off some in-between.
Too bad you couldn’t make it up to my town this Saturday, we have the Freihofer’s Run For Women 5K, 4000 racers including olympians from all over the world, but anyone ( Female ) can sign up, and $10,000 for 1st place. The course record is 15:18 by the Moroccan Asmae Leghzaoui, but she has been nailed for doping in the past. The best part is the finish, downhill to the max and VERY fast.
Great job on your 5K! I am planning to do the next one, which I think is in July! Great time!!
I can’t make that race :( I might do the Hey I Know You 5k in Macungie on the 17th though.
Still a pretty quick 5K! Hope the legs are feeling okay post-run :) You’re being so smart at the recovery, I’m taking notes…haha
Seems like you may have had a good run this morning?! Hope so! Freihofer’s is an AWESOME race! Next year we should do it. I did it one year, so awesome- so many elites go. We can go and I’ll meet Oscar! Rock on girl!
No, I did not run this morning. But it was a perfect day out there, wasn’t it? I’m heading out tomorrow morning to see what these legs can do. They failed me on Sunday morning – 3.5 miles at 9:40 pace. What gives?!
Oscar, thanks for the tip on that 5k. Maybe Megan and I will be up next year for that one. Megan – major road trip!
Yeah girl! How about it, such a fun race!
