Wow! I just came across an article about Matt Fitzgerald’s new book, Run, The Mind Body Method of Running by Feel. I cannot wait to get my hands on this book, due out on June 1st. Just that little glimpse of the book via the article pretty much describes me to a “T”. I have been a huge Fitzgerald fan ever since falling in love with his book Performance Nutrition for Runners, available here.
those both sound like really good reads!!!!! i love running by feel. and i esp love when that feel matches up with a goal pace,… but before i was hurt i was running a LOT without the watch.
I read the short article, the one paragraph begs the question: Is the dog wagging the tail, or the tail wagging the dog?
For instance, I notice I “enjoy” my workouts if I accomplish what I set out to do, and vise-versa. Maybe you’re going through hell at the time, but afterward you feel like you met that days’ goal.
He says that “If you notice that after you have several low enjoyment scores in a row, and that your time is going downhill, you have learned that something needs to adapt in your training plan.”
And more importantly: “It’s impossible to get bad results while you’re enjoying yourself and to keep getting good results when you’re not.”
So yeah, you’re only going to be a happy camper when you are running well, and are intuitively going to make adjustments when you’re not.
